Listen and Read

Shāng chǎng lǐ xīn kāi le yì jiā yī fu diàn, wǒ men zǒu zhe qù ba.

小林
好。那条裙子看起来漂亮极了。
Hǎo. Nà tiáo qún zǐ kàn qǐ lái piào liang jí le.
Good. That skirt looks extremely pretty.
小雨
可是短裤也不错,颜色不比裙子差。
Kě shì duǎn kù yě bú cuò, yán sè bù bǐ qún zǐ chà.
But the shorts are also good. The color is not worse than the skirt.
小林
你先试试裙子,再看看短裤合不合适。
Nǐ xiān shì shì qún zǐ, zài kàn kàn duǎn kù hé bu hé shì.
Try the skirt first, then see whether the shorts fit.
小雨

Pattern: `verb + 着 + verb`

动词 + 着 + 动词

`着` after the first verb shows the state or manner while doing the second action.

我们走着去商场吧。
Wǒ men zǒu zhe qù shāng chǎng ba.
Let’s walk to the mall.
她拿着衣服去试。
Tā ná zhe yī fu qù shì.
She takes the clothes and goes to try them on.
4

Pattern: `A 不比 B + adjective`

A + 不比 + B + 形容词

This pattern says A is not more or less than B in the stated way, often to disagree with a comparison.

短裤不比裙子便宜。
Duǎn kù bù bǐ qún zǐ pián yi.
The shorts are not cheaper than the skirt.
这件衣服不比那件难看。
Zhè jiàn yī fu bù bǐ nà jiàn nán kàn.
This piece of clothing is not uglier than that one.
5

Pattern: `adjective + 极了`

形容词 + 极了

`极了` strongly emphasizes a high degree, like “extremely.”

这条裙子漂亮极了。
Zhè tiáo qún zǐ piào liang jí le.
This skirt is extremely pretty.
今天热极了。
Jīn tiān rè jí le.
It is extremely hot today.
6

Learning Note

`更` makes a direct comparison stronger.

`比...更...` says one item is even more in that quality. Use it when both items have the quality, but one is stronger.

7

Practice

Choose the `不比` sentence.

You want to say the shorts are not worse-looking than the skirt.

Which sentence uses `不比` correctly?

8

Practice

Choose the manner sentence with `着`.

You want to say someone walks while wearing a red skirt.

Which sentence is natural?
