Listen and Read

First listen to how two classmates talk about weather and how they feel.

Xiǎo Fāng, xià xuě le.
Xiao Fang, it is snowing.
Shì a, jīntiān yǒudiǎnr lěng.
Yes, today is a little cold.
小林
Nǐ lěng ma?
Are you cold?

Wǒ juéde yǒudiǎnr lěng. Wǒ xiǎng huí jiā.

Nǐ yào hē shuǐ ma?
Do you want to drink water?
Yào. Wǒ hē diǎnr rè shuǐ.
Yes. I will drink some warm water.
Jīntiān tài lěng le.
Today is too cold.

Pattern: `

This lesson first teaches `了` at the end of a sentence.

Sentence-final `了` often shows a change or a new situation. When it starts snowing, say `下雪了`. When someone becomes sick, say `我生病了`.

Xià yǔ le.
It has started raining.
Xià xuě le.
It has started snowing.
Tiānqì lěng le.
The weather has become cold.
Tā shēngbìng le.
He has gotten sick.
4

Quick Practice

Recognize when to use sentence-final `了`.

It starts snowing. Which sentence is most natural?

Choose the option that shows a new situation.

5

Pattern: `

Use this pattern to show a high degree with stronger feeling.

了` often shows a high degree and an exclamatory tone. It can be negative, as in `太冷了`, or positive, as in `太好了`.

Tài lěng le!
It is too cold!
Tài hǎo le!
That is great!
Jīntiān tài máng le.
Today is really busy.

Core Words

These words help you talk simply about illness and advice.

生病
shēngbìng
to get sick; to be sick
to drink
热水
rè shuǐ
warm water; hot water
huí
to return; to go back
7

Learning Note

When someone is sick, first learn three very basic things to say.

HSK1 does not need complex symptom descriptions. First read `喝热水` and `回家休息` smoothly. `有点儿 + adjective` means a little, as in `有点儿冷`; `喝 + 点儿 + thing` means drinking a little of something, as in `喝点儿热水`.

hē diǎnr rè shuǐ
Drink some warm water.
huí jiā xiūxi
Go home and rest.
8

Quick Practice

Choose the most natural degree expression.

Which sentence means `It is too cold today`?

Choose the sentence that uses `太...了`.

9

Learning Note

Turn weather and body feelings into two short question-answer groups.

Repeat first. In the weather sentence, only replace `下雪` with `下雨`. For the degree sentence, practice `今天太冷了` and `今天太忙了` separately; do not put `忙` into the weather sentence.

jīntiān tiānqì zěnmeyàng? xià xuě le, yǒudiǎnr lěng
How is the weather today? It is snowing and a little cold.
wǒ juéde yǒudiǎnr lěng, xiǎng huí jiā xiūxi
I feel a little cold and want to go home to rest.
