Learning Note

Combine small words to make common greetings.

`们` marks more than one person and goes after a pronoun or person word, not after `好`.

你好。
Nǐ hǎo.
Hello.
Dàjiā hǎo.
Hello, everyone.
Nǐmen hǎo.
Hello to you all.
Tóngxuémen, dàjiā hǎo!
Classmates, hello everyone.
4

Pattern: `

Choose the right form of you for the person you are speaking to.

`你` is for one person. `您` is more polite and is often used for teachers or elders. `你们` is for two or more people. Use `大家好` to greet a group.

你好。
Nǐ hǎo.
Hello.
Chén lǎoshī, nín hǎo!
Hello, Teacher Chen.
Nǐmen hǎo.
Hello to you all.
Dàjiā hǎo.
Hello, everyone.

Learning Note

Imitate the whole sentence first, then learn the rule slowly.

Listen to the whole sentence first, then repeat it. Written as `nǐ hǎo`, the first syllable can sound a little like `ní` in speech. For now, copy the audio instead of memorizing tone-change rules.

你好。
Nǐ hǎo.
Hello.
Dàjiā hǎo.
Hello, everyone.
Tóngxuémen, dàjiā hǎo!
Classmates, hello everyone.
